Robert Edward Mitchell, Jr., lovingly known as “Mitch” or “Junior” passed away Monday, May 24, 2021 in
Newport News, Virginia.
He was born January 2, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Robert Edward Mitchell, Sr. & Beatrice Walker
Mitchell. After the passing of his mother, he and his little brother, John P. Mitchell went to live in Mount
Holly, Arkansas with their Aunt Robbie. He graduated from New Hope High School in 1969 & afterwards
attended the HBCU currently known as University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
In 1974 Robert was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Army from which he retired as a
Major after proudly serving 20 years. He held different titles while serving, most notably being an Armor
Officer and a Transportation Officer in Armor Battalion. During his military career he earned the
Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense
Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon. His last
duty assignment was USA TRADOC in Fort Monroe, Virginia.
After retiring, Robert settled down in Newport News, Virginia, where he enjoyed spending his free time
with his family & friends. He was fondly known within his community, a generous donator to many
charities, a political enthusiast, avid sports fan & beloved father.
Robert’s memories will forever be cherished by his wife Elke B. Mitchell, daughter Ebony E. Mitchell,
stepson Nikolai K.G. Burkart, brother John P. Mitchell, “sister” Doris Gurganious Smith, life-long best
friend Melvin McDaniel and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
He will be laid to rest at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia on Monday,
