Judith Evelyn Hilty (née West), 74, of Norfolk, Virginia passed away on September 23, 2021 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family who will miss her dearly.
Born in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late James Howard and Cora Evelyn West. She graduated from Old Dominion University in 1969 with a degree in English. She retired from Norfolk Public Schools after 35 years as an English teacher, primarily at Rosemont Middle School.
She had a great love of books, especially true crime and mysteries, and could usually be found reading. She also loved collecting cookie jars and trinket boxes, which she enjoyed hunting for in thrift stores and antique shops. Judy had a passion for all animals, especially her rescue dogs Treble and Clef, who were always delighted to curl up in her lap for a pet and snuggle. What she loved most of all, however, was undoubtedly her family. She was a proud and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother of 6. Her family was always her top priority, and there was nothing she enjoyed more than spending time with her loved ones.
Judy is survived by her husband of 41 years, Richard; her daughters Jennifer Tellis (son-in-law Sunil) and Amy Hilty (son-in-law Ben Levinstein); her grandchildren, Madeline Tellis, Katharine Tellis, Gabriella Tellis, John Paul Tellis, Anthony Tellis, and Eleanor Levinstein; sister Frances Wolcott; and brother James West.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society or the Norfolk SPCA.
