Barbara Clifton Miller, age 79, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019, at her home in Hampton, VA. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Barbara was born in Ft. Bragg, NC on September 19, 1939, and was lovingly adopted at a young age by her maternal aunt and her husband, the late Myrtle Ethel and Hardy Bascom Clifton, and was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Barbara is survived by her five daughters, Jeannine Forrest (Braden) of Hampton, VA, Carla Cline of Norfolk, VA, Kristy Matthews (William) of Irmo, SC, Kimberly Variano (David) of Jacksonville, FL and Karen Miller of Hampton, VA; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Martin, Heather Conway, Dennis Amato, Devon Variano, Zachary Matthews, Tyler Matthews, David Variano, Meaghan Matthews and Jared Forrest; and one great grandchild, Ashlyn Martin. She was proceeded in death by a sister, Peggy Nix, of TX, and the father of her children, William “Bill” Miller of North Carolina.
Barbara graduated from Peace College in Raleigh, NC, and then settled in Hampton, VA in 1962 where she raised her five daughters. Barbara loved singing and dancing, and performed in many musical productions as a teenager. One of her favorite memories was seeing the Rockettes in New York City. She loved all types of music, especially the songs of Ray Charles, Paul Simon and Elton John. Barbara also loved sports and never wanted to miss a “good” game, whether it was professional or a college game. In 1970 Barbara became a Jehovah’s Witness, and her faith sustained her for the rest of her life. Barbara faithfully taught her children to love God, and one of her favorite scriptures was 3 John 1:4.
The family is thankful to those who spent time with Barbara over the last two years since she suffered her stroke in March 2017. She looked forward to your visits and was strengthened and comforted by your love and your kindness.
A service will be held at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 717 E. Little Back River Road, Hampton, VA 23669 on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a contribution to your favorite charity.
Cremation Society of Virginia-Newport News assisted the family with arrangements.
